It doesn’t make sense.  None of it, really.  How can we ever justify the loss of the life of a child?  There is nothing anyone can say that will ever make what happened yesterday in Connecticut okay.  I don’t like to jump on the bandwagon, but I wanted to say something here today in hopes of reminding those of you who are Christians that God has a plan and that although this tragedy seems like something He would never have scripted, it is all part of something larger which we cannot see.  For those who don’t believe or who are struggling to believe, if you question the love that God has for you, please don’t think that He simply lets things like this happen because He is mad at us or because He isn’t really watching over us.  This, like other tragedies, happened because God means to use it for our good.  We may never fully understand how, but eventually it will somehow manifest in something that changes hearts, lives and souls for the better.

I couldn’t hug my daughter enough last night, thinking of all of the beautiful souls who were taken away too soon.  We prayed together and asked God to send comfort to those  whose families were forever broken by this violence.  We asked that God would send them courage to face the next days and peace as they sort out the many questions they are sure to have.  We asked that God reach out to those who may be contemplating violent acts and that He supernaturally touch their hearts to prevent them from harming others.  We asked that the angels He has set here on earth would intervene in the lives of the broken and that their pain would not surface as anger and hate, but as action to help those in need.  It was a bit heavy for a nine-year old, but my daughter has a heart for helping others and I know that she trusts her God to take care of these things.  Knowing how much I love my little girl, I cannot imagine what those parents are going through and I wouldn’t dream of saying I understand their grief.  Though I have known grief and pain, it cannot compare to what they are feeling, I’m sure.

So, all I can say is that we are praying for the families and for the community of Newtown and for every family who is fearful of sending their child to school on Monday as they begin to wonder what’s next.  We cannot know how much time we have on this earth and this is why it is so very important to reach out to God and accept Him into our lives before it is too late. I mean no disrespect at all by saying that sometimes it takes a tragedy to bring us out of ourselves and help us understand who God is and why we need Him so much in our lives.  These things are not punishment, they are a blatant display of the power that Satan is trying to have over God’s people.  The young man who was responsible for the shooting was being controlled by something other than love for God.  This is certain.  We cannot allow this kind of darkness to settle over our hearts and minds.  We must fight to take hold of the light which is in Christ.  His love conquers all and when we place our trust in Him, we no longer have to fear what anyone on earth can take from us.  When we trust in God, we know the truth and that truth will set us free.  God bless the people of Newtown, Connecticut.  May you rest in His perfect peace as you heal.
