And so, today I was wondering just how many Christians are being critical of one another based on their political ideals and other silly things like race, class, and eye color.  It reminded me of the study done many years ago by that elementary school teacher where she segregated the blue eyed kids from the brown eyed kids and took them through a series of exercises to help show them how ridiculous it was to judge your fellow man by things that simply don’t matter.  In light of the death of Osama Bin Laden, I’m also wondering why this again brings up discussion of how many Democrats were against the war.  In my opinion, of course it is only the opinion of a lowly Democrat who has no preference between OSU and Michigan whatsoever, we should all be against war.  What purpose does it serve?  I, for one, will not be chained by the oppressive nature of politics in today’s society.  I won’t allow the media or the government to manipulate me and keep me focused on things that deflect my attention from my purpose in God’s eyes.  His is the only kingdom worth fighting for yet we have no line item in our country’s budget for that kind of defense. 

With that said, I might as well say that I’m also surprised to hear so many Christians bashing President Obama.  Isn’t there something in being a follower of Jesus Christ that says we should love one another?  Shouldn’t we respect the office of the President of the United States simply for what it is?  At least Obama brings at least some intelligence and class to the office and I was extremely impressed at his emphasis on wishing that God would bless our country during his speech last night.  I wasn’t a huge fan of Obama, however; I am glad that I eventually voted for him.  I believe he is trying to fix what was undoubtedly the biggest mess anyone could have inherited.  But, as our pastor said yesterday in his sermon, everything that was once seen as good is now viewed as evil and everything that was evil is now seen as good.  If we listen long enough to the wrong opinions, we can also be filled with them and begin to live our lives by them even when we know in our hearts that we once were living the right way.  God help us never to be convinced that even Christ, our Savior, was evil.  If we allow our politics to dictate the way we feel about other people, then it’s not too far of a leap before we are beginning to question just how great Jesus is and why we should follow Him at all. 

We really need to be careful and remember the wise words uttered in Romans 12:2, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”  Our minds are not renewed by FOX News, nor are they renewed by the constant bashing of a political figure.  By the same token, we are not transformed by victory if it only begets more battle.  We may be refreshed, but only to a set point.  These things will not bring us closer to God and have no intention of doing so.  Only faithful prayer and thanksgiving and a life of service to the Lord will bring these rewards.
